Since Old Testament times, music has been an essential part of worship. At Oakmont Baptist Church, we want to continue to enhance meaningful worship through music. By providing a wide variety of music and worship experiences for all ages, we can stimulate growth, both musically and spiritually. We invite you to "make a joyful noise unto the Lord" by joining one of our choirs. A brief synopsis of meeting times for each group is provided for your benefit.
Chancel Choir
This choir is for all adults. No auditions are required. Rehearsals are every Wednesday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Currently, this choir prepares music for and leads worship in all three morning worship services. Participants may sing in one or more of the morning services. This group also leads in major musical productions at various times throughout the year, including some ministry opportunities away from church facilities.
Prime Timer's Choir
Our Prime Timer's Choir rehearses every Wednesday afternoon, 4-5 PM. This group leads in worship on the first Sunday morning of every month at the early worship service and is active in ministering through music within the community. This choir is an inter-generational ministry, with the purpose of developing relationships through a musical experience.
Youth Choir
Students in grades 7-12 may participate in one of several musical experiences. These Sunday night offerings include a Youth Choir, handbells, and the Youth Praize Ensemble (instrumental). While the meeting times occasionally change, these musical groups are a part of the Youth Ministry Electives offered every Sunday night. The Music and Youth Ministries of Oakmont strive to present involvement areas for youth to receive training and leadership opportunities to serve both in the church and outside her four walls.
Children's and Preschool Choirs
Six graded choirs meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-6:45 p.m. Preschool Threes, Preschool Fours, Preschool Fives (Kindergarten), Music Makers (Grades 1-2), Praise Makers (Grades 3-4), and Young Musicians (Grades 5-6) make up our children's graded choir ministry. All choirs begin fresh in September, although new members may join any week. Our children's choirs have opportunities to lead in worship services at various times throughout the year and to participate in ministry and fun events, as well.
Instrumental Music
Oakmont continues to expand in the area of instrumental music with an adult orchestra and a youth (grades 7-12) instrumental ensemble. The adult group meets weekly on Wednesday nights, 6:15-7:15 p.m. and will lead in various worship services throughout the year. (Youth who are interested in playing with the adult group are asked to audition.) The youth ensemble meets on Sunday nights as part of the Youth Ministry Electives. Instrumental soloists and small ensembles are periodically called upon to perform as well.
Solo and Vocal Ensembles
Faithful participation in our Music Ministry is required before anyone is utilized in solo and ensemble work. Currently, Oakmont has two performing adult ensembles, Joyful Sounds, a group of 8-10 ladies, and Highest Praise, a mixed group of 14-18 adults. These groups lead in worship on a monthly basis and generally will present a Christmas and spring concert.
Handbell Choirs
Oakmont has three on-going bell choirs, including an older children's choir (Peace Players), one youth ensemble, and one adult group (JuBellation Ringers). Enrollment is open in the fall of each year, and auditions are held at this time for placement in the appropriate bell choir. Rehearsal times are as follows: Children's: Wed. 5:25 - 6:15 p.m., Youth: Sun. 6:45-7:30 p.m., and Adult's: Sun. 4:30-5:30 p.m.
