Like most people, a significant part of who I am has been influenced by my upbringing. I consider myself fortunate to have been born and raised in Eastern North Carolina. Although I was born in the town of Laurinburg, I spent most of my formative days in Wendell where my Dad served as pastor for 27 years at the Wendell Baptist Church.
Currently my family and I live here in Greenville. Kelli, my wife, is a native of Hickory. We have two children, Caleb and Anna Katherine. We are entertained by two wonderful dogs, Buddy and Sydney. Buddy, although ninety pounds, is still very much a puppy in how he bounds around our yard. Although more seasoned, Sydney could very well be the smartest dog in the world. Most of the time I honestly think she understands what I am telling her.
Another significant aspect of my life has been my formal education. I graduated from Campbell University in 1989, where I earned a degree in Business Administration. In 1994, after sensing a call into full time Christian ministry, I attended Divinity school at Gardner-Webb University where I received my Master of Divinity degree and then later, my Doctor of Ministry Degree.
In my first experience ministering in the local church, I served as the Minister to Youth at the First Baptist Church in Spindale, NC. Upon receiving my Masters Degree, I was called to Zebulon Baptist Church in Zebulon, NC where I served as the Associate Pastor of Discipleship. In 1999 I was called to serve as the Associate Minister of Education at the Johns Creek Baptist Church in Alpharetta, Georgia where I remained for six years. I have served as Minister of Education here at Oakmont since 2005.
A few of my favorite things include the writings of C.S. Lewis, Frederick Buechner, and Anne Lamott. I enjoy nearly all types of music, but I am especially partial to Vince Gill, Rich Mullins, The Eagles, and anything by Jimmy Buffett. (Yes, I am a pirate.) On an off day, you will most likely find me golfing, fishing, or spending time with my family. Some of my favorite days include combining all of those things.
