Missions
Loving Our Neighbors
“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matt. 20:28).
We believe that our worship of God shapes us toward deeper discipleship and more faithful serving of God and others. Missions is how we describe serving neighbors near and far in Jesus’ name. We pray to live out our worship and discipleship as God leads us to love, serve, and bless our neighbors.
Come join us as we love and serve God and neighbor! We’d love to serve with you! Alicia Porterfield will help connect you with the ministry where God is calling to participate.
Neighborhood Missions
-
Each Monday and Tuesday of the school year, from 3:20-4:30 pm, a team of tutors meets afterschool with our neighborhood children to tackle homework, strengthen skills, and build relationships. In the summer, we enjoy enrichment activities and in December, the Giving Tree of supplies both practical and fun gifts to celebrate Jesus’ birth.
-
Throughout the school year, a team of volunteers packs weekly backpacks of supplemental food for students living in food insecure settings. Each week, we are grateful to help these children “taste and see” God’s love.
-
On 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from 2:00—4:00 pm, volunteers help neighbors find clothing for their families. From school clothes to interview outfits to starting over after a crisis, this caring team offers both practical and spiritual support.
-
For many years, Oakmont has cared for the hard working staff of Eppes by providing homemade treats and teaching supplies in August, Christmas/New Year’s gifts, Valentine’s Day soup lunch, and end of year goodies. Periodically, we support fundraisers to help students go on trips or attend special events.
-
In addition to personal projects, this group of knitters, quilters, crocheters, and other gifted folks create items for the community, like hats for the hospital, scarves for the homeless, and market bags for school staff. They meet Tuesdays at 10:00 am.
-
Every Thursday morning, this handy group builds accessibility ramps for our Pitt County neighbors. As of January 2026, this ministry has built over 595 ramps since its start in 2013! The Ramp Ministry changes lives.
-
Each Tuesday afternoon, a team cooks and delivers a homemade meal to Homebound members and friends experiencing a crisis. This ministry nourishes the body and warms the heart, reminding people that they are loved and remembered.
-
Twice a month, a small team gathers at this residential recovery program for Bible study with the moms and childcare ministry with the little ones. On occasion, Oakmont hosts workshops on topics like parenting and healing trauma for these friends.
-
Oakmont owns an apartment complex next door and provides affordable housing to support neighbors in need. Through this ministry, we offer safe, stable homes while demonstrating God’s care and compassion in tangible ways.
Community Partners
We share a monthly contribution with these partners and engage with their work whenever possible.
-
Funded by their thrift store, Hope of Glory offers financial empowerment ministries to help families create a brighter future. Oakmont assists with sorting and hanging clothes, the Christmas Store, and Change Out Days to switch clothing between seasons.
-
Gregg Green leads this wrap-around ministry for single moms and their children. Oakmont helps provide gifts and gifts certificates for the moms for Christmas and graduation presents. We also host the moms and kids for enrichment activities.
-
Founder and Executive Director Pam Strickland keeps us updated on progress and needs in the work to end human trafficking in North Carolina. Oakmont hosts the ministry’s Christmas Fair Trade Market and supports their work as much as possible.
-
Oakmont supports the staff of this all-boys Christian school with treats, supplies, and a big Christmas meal. In 2025, our Missions Kids led Oakmont in collecting shoes for TSA’s Shoe Drive fundraiser for their Family Emergency Support fund.
Global Missions
Each February, a team from Oakmont has been joining Friends of Honduras in building a medical clinic to support an under resourced rural area. In 2026, the team saw the fruits of their labor as the clinic is up and running.
Oakmont partners with the work of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (national) and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina in loving and serving our neighbors nationally and globally. We recently assisted with “Christmas for the Mountains” by creating gift bags for teenagers in areas still recovering from Hurricane Helene. We also served as Encourager Church for Jenny Jenkins in Haiti before her retirement.

The Diaconate serves along with the Pastor and church staff as a part of the pastoral care and leadership team for the church. Biblical qualifications for the office of Deacon can be found in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. Deacons minister to families during times of hospitalization, grief experiences, death, and family crises. Deacons also have a proclamation and leadership responsibility to the church as they lead in worship, and help to give overall direction in the spiritual aspects of church life.
