Spiritual Growth
Spiritual Formation at Oakmont
We believe the Holy Spirit is at work making us more like Jesus, so that our lives and life together reflect the love and grace of Christ. We also believe everything we do as a congregation contributes to our spiritual formation - which means spiritual growth at Oakmont is multi-generational! We want preschoolers and senior adults to know each other by name and pray for each other, and the same is true for all ages.
At the same time, we recognize the value of gathering with people who are in similar seasons of life. So, in addition to our ministries with children and youth, we offer Sunday morning Bible study groups for adults of all ages and two Wednesday night Bible study options for adults.
Sunday Morning Bible Studies
Starting each week at 9:40am
Young adults
With lots of connections to East Carolina University and Pitt Community College, our young adult small group of students, young professionals, and young married couples are experiencing community together and growing in their faith. The group meets for Bible study each Sunday morning, plugs into all areas of our church’s life, and has been known to visit “the Jungle” to cheer on the ECU Pirates’ baseball team.
Young families with children
In our Sunday morning Bible study group called “Journey,” couples and singles encourage one another in the journey with Jesus, and parents receive encouragement for the joyful and challenging journey they share with their children. The Dads in this class regularly meet for Bible study and encouragement on Sunday nights. Many of the children have older adults in the congregation who are their prayer partners.
Middle Adults and early retirees
Whether encouraging adult children, helping care for grandchildren or aging parents, still engaging in a career or entering retirement, mid-life is an exciting time with it’s own unique challenges and opportunities. Come find community with Life Lessons, Potter’s Clay, Formations, or Koinonia (all female) Sunday morning Bible study classes.
Senior Adults
In addition to our Senior Adult choir (the Joy Singers), our once-a-month lunch gathering and once-a month coffee gathering, and our regular trips, senior adults gather each Sunday morning for Bible study in the Pathfinders class, the Messengers class, and the Disciples class.
Wednesday Evening Bible Studies
During the school year, we offer the following studies:
5:45 PM: Women’s Bible Study | Led by Rev. Alicia Porterfield
A video/workbook based study of specific books of the Bible or biblical themes.
6:00 PM: Large Group Bible Study | Led by Rev. Eric Porterfield
Most often a verse by verse study of various Bible books, with occasional thematic studies, such as helping families live faithfully with technology.
6:00 PM: Youth Bible Study and Children’s Music and Missions
